Review of the day

There was maybe a sense of inevitability about the victory of Waldorf Salad this afternoon…

As recently as Sunday, I was going on about the ‘modus operandi’ of Venetia Williams - and how I felt should could get one of her horses fit, if required.

On Sunday, it was Renard, who had no record fresh – but who I felt would not want for the outing: today it was Waldorf Salad.

In fairness, the record of Waldorf Salad fresh, made Renard look like a ‘fast starter’.
In his 3 previous seasons, he’d not beaten a single horse home on his seasonal debut – finishing last of 7, 15 & 9.

Well he sorted out that particular stat this afternoon, in no uncertain terms - and in the process, did for the days only tip, Like Sully.

Maybe not too surprisingly, he was backed to do so, as well...
7/1 this morning, he was 5/1 by the off.
The market tends to know in these kind of races.

And the market also knew that Glenwood Star was one to avoid.
4/1 when I issued this morning, he was out to 8/1 at the off – the same price he was available at, last night.

You have to think it was the ‘wrong’ people who backed him early – and as a result, possibly compromised his chances…

With regards to Like Sully, then he ran a perfectly respectable race.
Just in behind Waldorf Salad for most of the race, he looked the most likely winner when taking up the running after jumping the third last.

He traded pretty low in running at that point (1.52), but when he faced the Towcester hill, his legs went.
It takes a certain type of horse to come up that hill – and I suspect Like Sully isn’t that type.
Over a sharper course, I think he could have a small race in him…

With regard to the days mentions, then generally, they were there or thereabouts – as you would expect, considering their prices…

The one mention worth noting, was probably Kavanaghs Corner.
As I suggested this morning, I was trying to find a reason to support him in what looked a very weak race – but couldn’t.
Well, he nearly made me pay for that, as he too looked the most likely winner at the bottom of the Towcester.

However, as with Like Sully, he struggled up the hill and eventually finished a well beaten third. He’s another who could be of interest, when there is less emphasis on stamina…

TVB.
