Review of the day

A couple of decent runs resulted in a couple of placed efforts today - but that’s not much good when you are backing win only (as we invariably are !).

Krackatoa King was the first tip to run and he put up a good performance to finish third.
His chance of winning was compromised by some novicey jumping – though Golden Chieftain won well.

I’m sure Krackatoa King can build on todays performance and he will doubtless win a similar race before long – though he is likely to be better found by the early market, next time…

Sidbury Hill also managed to finish third in his race – and again ran pretty well.
To be honest, I thought that if he jumped round, he would win – so I was actually a little disappointed to see him jump round and lose !

That said, he didn’t jump with real conviction (maybe understandably) and that possibly cost him.

Again, I would expect him to go on from this and win a similar race before the season is out…

The only other tip on the day, Exitas, didn’t perform quite so well…
I always find late market weakness concerning – and he was certainly weak in the market, just before the off.

He looked to me like a horse out for a run to get his handicap mark down.
To an extent, I can understand that (he could easily be dropped 5lb for todays run) – but it’s a little disappointing, as I think today’s race was there to be won.

As with the other 2 tips, he remains one to be interested in…

You would have to question whether we should remain interested in Renard.
Once again he disappointed this afternoon – and with everything in his favour, he’s running out of excuses.
He just looked slow – and whilst he will doubtless be dropped in the handicap (and maybe in race class), I think a watching brief has to be the order with him.

It was interesting to see the 2 ‘potential improvers’ in the race, fight out the finish.

In the other race on the Wincanton card, Present Man was also a big disappointment.
He travelled nicely – but just didn’t get home.

Zaphyros Boy would probably have taken the race, if he had not stumbled on landing after the last.
It would be no surprise to see him go one better next time…

Over at Gowran, My Murphy was an ultra game winner of the Thyestes.
He’d finished second to Djackadam last season – so this was great compensation.

It was also nice to see a small trainer take a big prize – holding off the Gordon Elliot trained pair, Mala Beach and Ucello Conti.

Finally the Galmoy hurdle was won by favourite, Alpha Des Obeaux.
It was a good performance, but not one that screamed World hurdle winner.

More taking, was the run of At Fishers Cross – that said, he has already shown himself a little shy of the level required to win the World hurdle…

TVB.
