Review of the day

We played our ‘get out of jail free’ card this afternoon – and managed to come out of the day level…

Whilst superficially, it looks as if I got the big race of the day virtually spot on – the reality is, luck intervened in our favour.

As De Fer ended up a tenacious winner of the race – with Gores Island third.
But if Stiletto hadn’t fallen at the third last, severely hampering Unique de Cotte, I suspect things would have looked very different at the line.

In fairness, we’ve had plenty go the other way, so I’m not complaining – but it was still a bit of a hollow ‘win’.

As De Fer looked like he needed at least half a mile further (which is backed up by his form); whilst Gores Island just didn’t run as well as I expected.

It appeared as if luck might also favour one of the mentions earlier in the afternoon, when Notebook opted not to start, at Towcester.

However, the incident (Newton Gironimo also failed to start) seemed to distract Hopes Wishes, who lost about half a dozen lengths, herself.

Despite this, she looked by far the most likely winner turning in, but was worried out of it close home.

Ultimately, she was possibly a little unlucky – or possibly a little lucky.
It was difficult to say, really !

I’m not sure Admiral Blake was unlucky in the 2:10 race at Towcester – but anyone who backed him early was a bit unlucky not to get a better run for their money.

He had been supported in from 20/1 to 13/2 at the off – and was very strong in the market.
It was therefore doubly disappointing to see him capsize at the first fence.

In stark contrast, Princess Fleur was extremely weak in the handicap chase later on the card.
She was 7/1 this morning – but 10/1 at the off.
Despite that, she ran a fair race to finish fourth.

The winner, High Aspiration’s was one of those ‘dark horses’ that I was fearful of this morning.
He was 8/1 early (even bigger yesterday evening) – but backed in to 10/3, he won well enough.

Finally, the money eventually came for Baoulet Delaroque at Wincanton – and she duly hacked up.
She was 9/4 early – but sent off a strong 13/8 shot, she bolted up.

Without doubt, it was a day where it paid to listen to the market…

TVB.
