Review of the day

There was no joy with the tips again this afternoon, thereby completing a disappointing four days for them.

As has been the case all week, most of them ran well – but non of them ran quite well enough.

There was no tip in the opening race of the day, which was probably a good thing, as I’d read the race wrongly.
My feeling was that the English trained horses would get the better of the Irish trained ones – but instead, Irish trained horses finished first, second, third and fourth !

Moving on…

Starchitect was the first tip of the day to run – and he ran really well to finish fifth.
That said, he never really looked like winning, as Superb Story absolutely bolted up.
He was another horse who had clearly been layed out specifically for a race.
As I’ve said before, without inside knowledge, tipping such horses at ‘under the odds’ is always going to be difficult to do…

In fairness to Unowhatimeanharry, he certainly hadn’t been wrapped up in cotton wool.
The Albert Bartlett was his fifth victory of the season – and whilst I didn’t think he’d have the class required to win, he did - and he won well.

I thought Don Cossack had the class required to win a Gold Cup – and I was right on that score.
I was just a real shame that Cue Card came down at the third last.

My gut feeling is that Don Cossack would have won regardless - but it would have been great to see the two of them battling it out.

The Foxhunters chase saw the second tip of the day perform in the shape of Current Event – and once again, it ran really well, without ever really looking likely to win.

Ultimately it finished fourth – one place ahead of Victoria Pendleton and Pacha du Polder – and 3 places behind the heavily punted favourite, On the Fringe.

The big tip of the day – and in fact, the big tip of the week - was Squouateur.
I must be honest, I was a little reticent about putting him up at 5/1 last night – and I simply couldn’t believe that he was sent off 9/4 favourite.

It’s therefore a little ironic, that in a week when just about every well backed horse has won, he finished unplaced.
My suspicion is that he found the ground too quick – I’m absolutely sure he is better than his run today, suggested.

And so on to the final race of the meeting – and for one brief moment, jumping the second last, it did look like we might get a most unlikely winner.
Savello still seemed to be going very nicely indeed – but he came under pressure between the last two fences – and was beaten jumping the last.
To his credit, he battled on to finish an honourable fourth – but that’s no good when you back win only.

It’s been one of those weeks…
